TRADITIONAL ADVENTSKRÄNZE

The traditional Wichern Advent wreath has evolved into the Advent wreath with four candles - primarily for practical reasons. The Advent wreath has been made from fir green since around 1860.. In 1925 an Advent wreath was hung in a Catholic church for the first time. This happened in Cologne, followed by the first Advent wreath in Munich in 1930. However, the spread of the Advent wreath in Catholic churches and families continued elsewhere until after the Second World War. Today the advents wreath is produced in flower stores and luxury flower boutiques in many designs and colours but like always, with four candles. With the first candle begins the Advent season. Every Sunday until Christmas another candle is lit until all four candles give a cozy “Licht”. The Advent wreath is meant to shorten the time until Christmas and to bring light into the dark season. The increase of light symbolises the joyful expectation of the arrival of Jesus Christ.
